Walk To End Alzheimer’s

The 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place this Saturday, October 27 at 7 a.m. at Rainbow Lagoon Park in Long Beach.

On-site registration will begin at 7 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. and the walk at 9 a.m. Closing ceremonies are at 10 a.m.

There is no registration fee for this walk, but participants are encouraged to make donations in an effort to help deliver educational programs and support groups nationwide.

5th Annual Zombie Walk Music & Arts Festival

The living dead return to Long Beach for the 5th Annual Long Beach Zombie Walk on Saturday, October 27 from 3-11 p.m. Zombies will be taking over Shoreline Village, Marina Green, and Rainbow Harbor, and will feature zombies of all ages!

This year’s event is expanding into a full day-long festival, complete with music and film, food and drinks, and vendors and art. Zombie Passports are available for purchase and include access to live music, zombie activities, contests, exhibitors, and an outdoor screening of “Shaun of the Dead!”. Passport holders will also benefit from 10% off at participating zombie-friendly businesses, from the date of purchase until November 15. Zombies 12 and under are FREE!

Also on Saturday, October 27 is a Halloween Carnival at the Signal Hill Park Basketball Courts from 4-7 p.m. The carnival will feature food, games, candy, petting zoo, contests, live music, and a toddler area. Children ages 1-13 are $3; adults are free with paid children.

12th Annual Pet Appreciation Fair

The 12th Annual Pet Appreciation Fair and Walk for the Animals will be held this Saturday, October 13 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Archery Range at El Dorado East Regional Park.

The event, presented by the Petco Foundation and co-sponsored by Friends of Long Beach Animals and Long Beach Animal Care Services, is being hosted to help fund low-cost spay/neuter, medical attention for special needs of shelter animals, and humane education.

Participants can choose to walk either a 2K or a 5K route with or without a dog, in memory of a beloved pet, or in honor of a cat. The day will also feature food trucks, pet contests, exhibitors, vendors, raffles, children’s activities, and performances by Surf City Flyball and Disc Dogs of Southern California. Long Beach Animal Care Services will also be on hand with adoptable animals, and attendees can “Ask the Vet” and “Ask the Trainer” about their animal care questions.

The parade’s grand marshal will be Shoestring City Ranch, a non-profit organization that provides “free and low cost rural experiences to city youth while teaching teamwork, respect, and leadership skills in an ecologically friendly green-space working with rescued animals”.

Entry fee for walkers through October 12, including teams, is $25 for adults 19 and older, and includes a commemorative t-shirt, swag bag, raffle ticket, and parking pass. Special discounted rates will be offered to families, junior walkers (ages 10-18), and virtual walkers. Walkers under 9 are free. Registration the day of the event increase to $30 and does not include parking, a $7 value.

2012 Annual Beach Walk

On Saturday, October 20, The Children’s Clinic will be hosting the “2012 Annual Beach Walk: Walk for Health” at Marina Green on Shoreline Drive.

The event will feature a 5K Walk, 1K Walk Race for Kids (kids 12 and under), free lunch provided by Long Beach Fire Department, music and entertainment by Power 106, the Greener Good Farmer’s Market, and the Healthy Food Day Festival.

Registration is $30 for individual walkers, $25 for team walkers (minimum of 5 walkers), and $15 for student walkers (with ID). Kids 12 and under are FREE!
