Sunscreen 101

Sunscreen will help save your skin!

Even though the weather has been unpredictable lately, one of the reasons we love California so much (and pay an arm and a leg to live here) is because of the beautiful weather we experience all year round.

But with great weather comes great responsibility – at least for our skin, that is. It seems the older we get, the worse the sun affects our skin. What many people fail to realize is that the cause behind our skin wrinkling, spotting, and becoming dehydrated is primarily because we don’t wear sunscreen on a daily basis. Sunscreen has the ability to protect our skin from harmful rays and decrease the chance of skin cancer, and essentially has the power to slow down the signs of aging.

Here are some common mistakes people make when it comes to sunscreen and how to avoid them:

1. Not Using Sun Screen. This is especially common during the winter and early spring seasons, when most people think it’s not sunny or warm enough to get sun damage. Sunscreen should be applied regardless of the season and weather condition.

2. Not Using Enough. The average person uses less than half the recommended amount of sunscreen. It’s suggested that you apply a thick layer to each section of your body, making it hard to work it all in.

3. Not Reapplying, Especially When in the Water or Sweating. Even waterproof sunscreen needs to be reapplied often. Sunscreen should be applied every few hours depending on your activities.

4. Waiting Too Long to Put It On. To be effective, sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going outside.

Also, it’s important to understand the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of your sunscreen. Let’s take SPF 15 for example: If your sunscreen has an SPF 15, it will filter 93% of damaging rays. In other words, it will delay the onset of a sunburn in a person who would otherwise burn in 10 minutes to burn in 150 minutes. The SPF 15 sunscreen allows a person to stay out in the sun 15 times longer.

And ladies, the SPF in your make-up is usually not enough to protect your skin. Be sure to apply sunscreen before applying your make-up.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

It is a common misunderstanding that Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s Independence Day, when in fact it celebrates Mexico’s defeat over the French army at The Battle of Puebla in 1862. Check out the video below for the full history behind Cinco de Mayo:

Ernst & Haas is celebrating Mexico’s victory by having a fiesta with a variety of Mexican delicacies. We are proud to celebrate the Mexican culture and their accomplishments!

Earth Day Beach Clean-Up

Ernst & Haas Management recently participated in an Earth Day Beach Clean-Up hosted by the City of Long Beach

On April 23, numerous members of our Ernst & Haas team – along with our friends and family members – joined forces with the City of Long Beach to clean up Granada Beach as part of the city-wide Earth Day Beach Clean-Up.

With orange bags in hand and hearts ready to help, more than 20 people representing Ernst & Haas spent two hours cleaning up the beach. The event was rewarding, as we knew our efforts were not just affecting Long Beach, but also our environment.

We plan on doing one more beach clean-up before the year is over, and we encourage you to join us!

We Love Our Moms!

Mother's Day is this Sunday, May 8. Let's celebrate our moms!

What would our world be like without mothers? There are so many things that could be said about mothers and their impact, but it’s sufficient enough to simply state that we just couldn’t do life without them. We may joke about never wanting to be like our moms, but most of us come to the realization that if we ended up being even half of what our mothers are, we’d be happy.

And while many of us here at Ernst & Haas aren’t mothers just yet, we have definitely been influenced by our own mothers, or another motherly figure. Whether it’s your mom, grandma, aunt, sister or daughter, there’s at least one mother you can celebrate this Sunday.

With less than a week to go, now is the time to really start thinking about how you’re going to spoil your mom. Whether you clean her house, have flowers delivered, or treat her to a spa day, there are so many ways you can show your love for her. There are the typical gift giving ideas such as perfume, candles, gift cards, flowers, chocolates, or lotion sets. There’s the unique gift ideas such as making a personalized gift, photo collage, preparing a meal, or hosting a movie marathon of her favorite films. And then, of course, there’s the more expensive route, where you can spoil her with a spa treatment, shopping spree, all-expenses-paid-for trip, jewelry, or membership to a wine or chocolate club.

Regardless of what you do, we hope you use this Mother’s Day as an opportunity to spend time with your mom, a gift no dollar amount could ever purchase.

We’d love to hear about why your mom is so special, so be sure to leave us a comment. And if you have any creative gift-giving ideas, we’d like to hear about those too!
